El Superflat es un movimiento artístico posmoderno fundado por el artista Takashi Murakami, que se influencio por el manga y por el anime. Es un movimiento que expresa la cultura popular japonesa de la post-guerra. Superflat se refiere a la disolución de los límites entre el alta y baja cultura.
Su comienzo lo definieron como arte Nihonga, un arte en el que se utiliza las técnicas y materiales tradicionales japoneses.
En 1995 se crea una serie de imágenes que da paso a su estilo propio llamado Superflat, que son unas figuras o imágenes basadas en la animación, colores planos y un fuerte contenido sexual.
